Hyperlinks indicate active units in which "real-life" officers (members) may be stationed, however all units listed -- or referred in Capital Ship Organisational Structure -- are considered present and operational for purposes of plotline, mission building, fiction writing, etc. Note that each listed Systems Force also contains nine Corvettes (CRVs) and numerous support ships that are not displayed.
The Imperial Navy holds jurisdiction over three types of unit. The first is the standard Imperial Navy, including Sector Groups and Systems Forces. The second is Special Operations Vessels. The third is Imperial Installations not on the ground, such as a shipyard, platform, or skyhook. Not all such installations are displayed here since the list would be extensive.
Although the hierarchal structure of capital ships has become PHP-generated, the original Sector Group #1 chart graphic remains available for general interest.
Capital-scale Imperial warships may serve in any role if dictated by the situation, but for routine operations will be classified in one of four primary assignment types:
- Personal Flagship
Rare. Occasionally, high ranking Imperial officials or dignitaries (who are not part of standard organisational units) will be afforded their own flagships for galactic transportation.
- Dedicated Defence
Full time stationing in defence of a single Imperial installation, planet, or location.
- Special Operations
Ships not attached to any particular regional force. Used for the execution of special missions.
- Standard Patrol
Requiring a versatile range of duties, this is where most capital ships serve. Ships on standard patrol will be attached to a force and charged with patrolling their region of space, responding to assistance requests from Imperial worlds, and maintaining order in their area. May also be pulled from routine duty to serve in coordinated military assaults.
STANDARD PATROL VESSELS
Ships assigned to Standard Patrol are designated as part of organised units. The largest of these in the Imperial fleet is a Sector Group, which is defined as the sum total of ships charged with the defence of a single sector of Imperial space. Although the GE currently spans nearly eight sectors, there are only three designated Sector Groups patrolling, which leads to forces being spread somewhat thin. Nevertheless, up to three Star Destroyers with support ships may be deployed on short notice to a threatened system.
Each Sector Group is composed of one ISD, serving as flagship, and three Systems Forces under its command. (Other ships, such as Interdictors, may also be present under the direct command of the flagship.)
A Systems Force maintains control over dozens of star systems in its patrolling range, and is typically composed of four VSDs (one of which acts as flagship), three smaller fighter-carrying warships (such as FRGs), nine CRVs, and multiple other support ships. Systems Forces are usually independent -- rarely encountering one another -- although specific orders may periodically come from the Sector Group flagship. At the discretion of Flag Officers, Systems Forces may be further divided into Lines, which are typically composed of one VSD, one smaller warship, three CRVs, and multiple support ships. A single line of ships is, in most situations, the closest available emergency assistance at hand.
The bulk of the Empire's heavy warships are found within Sector Groups, and Standard Patrol vessels are commonly ordered away from their regular sphere of territory; to assist in large offensive operations, or -- less commonly -- to defend against a massive assault elsewhere.
PLANETARY DEFENCE
The temporary absence of Standard Patrol vessels from a particular system does not, in itself, leave Imperial worlds available for open assault. Nearly all Imperial worlds will possess at least one form of aerial defence, including: system patrol craft, fighter squadrons, planetary batteries, or planetary shielding. Depending on available resources and a planet's significance, several or all methods may be employed on a single world. (Populated Imperial worlds will also be garrisoned planetside with Imperial Army officers, and -- although their numbers are too limited to place on permanent garrison -- Stormtroopers will be landed to assist during crisis situations.)
System patrol craft, for those planets which possess them, are any number of capital ship designs ranging between 100 and 250 metres, although larger ships are occasionally relegated to this duty.
System patrol craft follow the primary directive to apprehend smuggling vessels, but they also serve as a star system's first line of defence against pirates, rebels and hostile aliens. Most are either designed or modified for speed and fire power. The GE favours utilising SFS IPV-1 System Patrol Craft (SPCs) and Corellian Corvettes (CRVs) for the bulk of its system patrol craft.
A NOTE ON GALACTIC POLITICS
Although the Empire is understaffed in contrast to pre-Endor times, available forces have been found sufficient. The "Charter of the New Republic", as proclaimed by the rebellion, prevents it from interfering with worlds that are willingly Imperial. A state of war is very existent, however, and rebels use no such restraint with Imperial military targets, including warships themselves. Assaults from traitorous Imperial factions, pirate raids, contraband, and various attacks on purely military installations currently pose the greatest military threat to the Empire.
